Baccarat is a card game that anyone can play. The simplicity of the game might be the main reason that this time honored game has survived for over 800 years. Over that period, Baccarat has undergone many transformations, but the basic principles remain the same.
Baccarat means “zero” and that is something that you definitely don’t want to get in the game. In Baccarat, the winner is the one who holds cards totaling nine or a number close to nine. To count your cards, you need the total of the cards in your hand, then you’ll have to drop the tens. For example, a hand of 6+7=13=3. Cards from 2 to 9 are worth face value. The 10, Jack, Queen, and King are valued at 10 points each. Ace is worth a single point.
Players around the table assume roles of Player or Banker. The casino’s role is to provide the cards, dealer and two croupiers. Roles vary based on the version of Baccarat being played.
Banker and Player Roles
Baccarat is unique in that it has a Banker – a player who puts his money for players to bet against. The Banker can only assume one role, either Banker or Player. The game allows for anywhere from 5-12 player’s hand. Both the Banker and the Player are dealt two cards each, lying face down. Every player that assumes the Player role gets two cards each. Players then bet on the Banker, Player or Tie.
If you have an 8 or 9 total – called a natural- on your first two cards, you’ll have to announce your victory. Frankly, this hardly ever happens, so a third card is dealt and the game gets really interesting from here. By the way, the third card is different from the other two cards in that it is dealt face up.
You’ll have to understand the rules of Baccarat in order to determine if you’re eligible for a third card. The third card rules for players are quite simple:
Draw a third card only if your first two cards total 0-5. If the total of the two cards is 6 or 7, do not draw the third card.
Banker’s Third Card Rules
When the Player does not draw a third card, the Banker must follow the rules outlined above. If the Player draws a third card, the rules for the Banker are as follows:
|Player’s Third Card||Banker’s Action|
|2 or 3||Draw: 0-4 Stay: 5-7|
|4 or 5||Draw: 0-5 Stay: 6-7|
|6 or 7||Draw: 0-6 Stay: 7|
|8||Draw: 0-2 Stay: 3-7|
|9,10, face card, or Ace||Draw: 0-3 Stay 4-7|
Fortunately baccarat is easy game also because of the fact that players do not have to count the cards and announce winner. Dealer counts all the cards for them. Also all the third card rules are known by the dealer so you do not really have to worry about these rules too much.
